Public Bathroom Etiquette: 9 Rules Everyone Should Follow

4 min read · Apr 20, 2026

Public bathrooms are shared infrastructure. A few small habits keep them usable for everyone behind you. Here's the short list.

  1. Leave the urinal/stall buffer. When there's space, never take the spot directly next to someone.
  2. Lock the door. A 2-second check saves a lifetime of awkwardness.
  3. Flush. Then look. Confirm it actually went down.
  4. Seat covers and paper go in the bowl, not the floor.
  5. Wash your hands. For real. 20 seconds, with soap.
  6. Dry your hands over the sink or dryer, not while walking out dripping.
  7. Don't take phone calls in the stall. The person next to you doesn't want to be on your conference call.
  8. Tell staff if something's broken or out of supplies. They can't fix what they don't know about.
  9. Leave a review. Whether it's spotless or terrible, the next person deserves to know.
